Why SVU?

There is nothing on TV that has had (and continues to have) as much impact on me as Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. The stories are disturbing, upsetting and sometimes down right sickening, but I really like the way in which the cases are handled. They have such an impact and many episodes have a good point to make. The characters on it are top rate too. Each has a place and a personality that could never be replaced.

I don't think there has ever been a show quite like SVU. It brings topics to light that most people will not talk about. It has given victims/survivors a voice, it handles the cases with sensitivity and compassion and the victims on the show are taken seriously. It has helped a lot of people as a result of the kind of focus the victims are given in the storylines and through the strength of these characters. It has unique plots and a unique way of portraying them.

Aside from the brilliance of the show itself, I really admire how much Mariska Hargitay (Olivia Benson) has done to help real-life sexual assault survivors. Starting The Joyful Heart Foundation shows how much she is in touch with the character she portrays.
